What does a burger have to do with BIM and the Orange Button?

To understand the BIM process it’s important to fully understand the design process. Each industry comes with it’s unique design phases, but in general it’s a chain of supply and demand of information. Using the ‘burger model’ can give us insight of where Orange Button comes in to play.

The start of a project

A project always starts with a demand, and in our case, it is usually a client requiring a new building for his services or businesses. The process is started with designing and refining until a design is made and the project can move to a phase where building permits etc. can be acquired.

This requires more expertise. A multidisciplinary design team is put together to create the necessary documents and ‘Building Information Models’.

With the building concept established, we have all the parameters in place to start planning the building and commence construction. The General Contractor comes into play and hires sub-contractors to be part of the building team. Each subcontractor brings their knowledge, and can therefore have effect on the performance models.

Eventually we strive to a perfect digital building environment and start construction on site with all the stakeholders!

Where does Orange Button comes in?

Now the question is, where does Orange Button fit in? The work of passive fire protection is normally applied by a sub-contractor. In comparison to other building components, the materials needed to construct, are not typically engineered in the performance face (top bun) of the design process. This is also not really possible, because every passive fire safety material is so specifically tested, that you could say it is manufacturer dependent. Working with a different manufacturer than engineered, could give a complete different outcome!

This is therefore a complete different process, as for say engineering a concrete wall, because concrete is a more generic material.

There is a chance, to use Orange Button in optimizing the performance models. If you could reach out to a subcontractor, using Orange Button with their specific materials. They could provide you with the correct opening, and overall parameters to design with! Optimizing construction, and minimizing construction costs! All you have to do is collaborate, and utilize the power of data from your BIM.
