How to start with Orange Button BIM
If you're reading this article, you may have already made the decision to 'do something' with BIM, and you work for a company specialized in passive fire protection. We, at Orange Button, have been maximizing the potential of models and processes for over ten years and are happy to help you get started! Often we receive the question: but how do you actually begin? And what do I need?

Before we delve into processes and stakeholder management, it’s important to understand the steps we use to engineer a BIM project.

What you need

  • Autodesk Revit license
  • Orange Button BIM license
  • Orange Button Revit dataset with template
  • IFC or Revit models of construction projects
  • Basic knowledge in using Autodesk Revit

Receiving BIM Files

Start by asking for BIM files from your clients. Ten years ago, this was quite challenging, but nowadays, more work is done using the BIM method. Especially on projects where passive fire protection is required!

What do you need for this? The right mindset! Involve your clients in the fact that you want to use the information from their Building Information Models! And try to get involved in the design process earlier.

Calculation

Always request the BIM models for every project that you want to make a quote for. And start using BIM to discover the positions and properties of fire-resistant seals. Doing this manually is quite a task (believe us) which is why we developed Orange Button BIM!

Our Orange Button BIM license contains several Autodesk Revit plugins that we’ve created to fully automate this process. What do you need to get started?

  • A license for Autodesk Revit. Note! Not the Lite version.
  • A license for Orange Button BIM.
  • The Orange Button Revit dataset.

The Orange Button BIM license includes the Firestop app for Revit, the OneClick apps for Revit, the Revit dataset and access to our Orange Button office project portal for projectmanagement and support.

To perform a calculation using these tools, these are the steps we typically follow:

  • Start a new project in Autodesk Revit.
  • Load the models (Revit or IFC) into your project.
  • Use the ‘Firestop for Revit’ app to discover the Firestop Clashes.
  • Use the Orange Button OneClick apps to:
    • Determine existing openings and dimensions from BIM.
    • Determine work heights.
    • Bundle Firestop clashes into multi-service penetrations.
    • Number Firestop clashes.
    • Determine work areas.

Quotation

From our Orange Button BIM Plugin and Autodesk Revit, you can generate multiple outputs for your quotation.

  • A bill of quantities showing all Firestop Clashes. This can also be opened in Excel.
  • A Floorplan showing the Firestop Clashes numbered.
  • An IFC Export (3D) containing all Firestop Clashes including their information.

How to start

Now, back to the beginning, how do you start this process? You’ve purchased the right tools but find it difficult to start!

We understand that BIM can sometimes be complex and challenging. A program like Autodesk Revit has a steep learning curve and isn’t always easy to use. Therefore, start with the right training. Take a Revit basic course to become familiar with the program. Did you know that Revit can be learned via e-learning? And not only that, it’s also much cheaper! We’ve developed BIM Tutorials for this purpose to elevate your skills. You can find these courses on bim-tutorials.nl

After laying a foundation in your Revit skills, you can start with your first ‘pilot’ project. To support you, we’ve created a Wiki with the necessary ‘get started’ information wiki.orangebutton.tech. You can also ask questions through our Online Support channel.

Follow the steps and make your first BIM Calculation!

BIM Design Service

We can imagine that this is a significant investment for a company in costs and knowledge. And before you are ready to take this step, you would like results first! Most of all, you want your first BIM project to be a success!

For this reason, we’ve provided our BIM Design Services. Our experienced BIM Engineers work daily on a wide range of international Firestop BIM Projects, ensuring the best possible outcome!

Expensive? Not at all, we’ve tailored our costs to the number of Firestop Clashes present in the project. Curious about our service model? Contact us, and we’ll be happy to show you the power and possibilities off our services.

Impact

In Building Information Models, there is an immense amount of information that you can use. With the experience we’ve gained, you too can make an impact with the power of BIM! Involve your clients, deliver a high-quality quotation, base your activities on data, and join the new generation of Firestop designers!
